Deck Cantilever Explained

Deck Cantilevering is a common practice in deck Building and used by professional alike.

What deck cantilevering means is that the frame of the deck over hangs across the beam and or supports.  The advantage of doing this is that it  makes the deck even more visually enhanced.  That means you can not see the beam , it's practically invisible. 

How far out can a deck be cantilevered?

For Residential the best practice is not to cantilever more that 24 inches from the beam.  However in all cases, it's always best to check with the local building department. 

For docks, and commercial, cantilevering can vary according to local building codes.
