DECKING JOISTS

Keeping Moisture Between House & Ledger

To do so requires the easy installation of  flashing to keep moisture from getting between the house and the ledger. This is an L shaped metal that will cover the top surface of the ledger with the vertical part of the metal goes upward up the house wall  while being lapped by building paper.

Other Decking Tips to Minimize rot on Joists:

Seal the ends of joists especially if they have been cut whether the wood is fir, pine, etc or even pressure treated.

If you are not using pressure treated wood, seal completely the joists and or use a joist jacket on the top of the joists where water can collect and sit on in-between the deck boards.  Usually can be bought in a roll and has a sticky back for application.
